GMC Scout vs Merchant Center diagnostics
By Terry Ecom · Last reviewed 2026-08-20 · Source: Google Merchant Center Help
You need Merchant Center. You also need a storefront pass before you spend a review. They are not substitutes.
What the native dashboard is for
Merchant Center is the system of record: verification, feeds, item statuses, warnings, and the button that requests review. Diagnostics tells you what Google already found in the data you submitted. That is necessary and it is reactive.
What it does not do
It does not crawl your Contact page for a phone number that matches the account. It does not tell you a returns policy is a Shopify stub. It does not HTTP-check every product URL you are about to submit. Google’s own misrepresentation audit is those website items.
What GMC Scout adds
A storefront crawl: 70+ checks, issue counts by category on the free report, full titles/evidence/URLs and a PDF when you unlock or subscribe. Use it to fix the site, then use Merchant Center to request review. We do not replace the dashboard and we do not promise the review will pass.
FAQ
Can I skip Merchant Center if I use GMC Scout?
No. You still need a Merchant Center account to sell on Google Shopping.
Does Scout sync my GMC account?
No. There is no OAuth connection. The scan is the public storefront only.
When should I run Scout versus looking at Diagnostics?
Run Scout before first submission, during a warning window, and before any appeal. Use Diagnostics for item-level feed errors on a live account.
